Bhaktapur, known as the "City of Devotees" and the "City of Culture," is an ancient Newar city situated 13 km from Kathmandu in Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley. Although it is the smallest city in Nepal, it boasts the highest population density and is celebrated for its remarkably preserved medieval art and architecture. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Bhaktapur displays a rich Malla-era legacy through its temples, intricately carved wooden palaces, and vibrant pottery traditions. Bhaktapur Durbar Square acts as a central open-air museum, featuring landmarks such as the 15th-century Palace of 55 Windows and the Golden Gate. The Nyatapola Temple, a five-story pagoda in Taumadhi Square, is Nepal’s tallest pagoda-style temple and is renowned for its impressive structural engineering. The city’s artisan heritage is highlighted in Pottery Square, where traditional clay pots are made, and through its famous woodcarving skills. Bhaktapur is also known for Juju Dhau, a sweet and creamy yogurt. The city’s narrow, brick-paved streets, traditional homes, and ancient water conduits create an immersive cultural atmosphere that is best experienced on foot. Bhaktapur hosts lively festivals, most notably the Bisket Jatra New Year celebration, in April.
